Benchmarking and evaluation are essential for building trust in climate modeling systems and understanding biases or sources of uncertainty. In this presentation we briefly review national and international efforts related to climate model benchmarking and identify several key gaps and opportunities for future progress, particularly in areas where the Department of Energy is positioned to demonstrate leadership. This presentation aims to set the stage for further discussions on metrics and benchmarking, with the intent of ensuring coordination among related efforts.
