The Climate Model Analysis and Intercomparison Project at the Program for Climate Model Diagnosis

The Program for Climate Model Diagnosis and Intercomparison (PCMDI) engages in and facilitates research ultimately aimed at quantifying and reducing uncertainty in climate projections. PCMDI develops innovative diagnostic methods and software tools for the analysis of climate and earth system models. PCMDI plays a critical supporting role in internationally-coordinated climate modeling activities designed to improve understanding of the climate system. High profile “model intercomparison projects” rely on PCMDI not only for leadership and project management, but also for making model output from these projects accessible to climate researchers worldwide. Among the focuses of PCMDI research are detection and attribution of climate change, metrics for quantifying model performance, modes of climate variability, and ocean heat content changes and sea level rise caused by climate change.
