A New Synoptic Scale Resolving Global Climate Simulation Using the Community Earth System Model

Summary

This publication describes the analysis of a high resolution climate system simulation using the NCAR Community Earth System Model (CESM) in which the horizontal resolution of the atmosphere and land components was ¼ degree and that of the ocean and sea ice components was 0.1 degrees. The spectral element version of the atmospheric dynamical core was used for this 100yr simulation.  Notable improvements in the climate simulation due to the increased resolution were observed, including the more realistic simulation of ENSO shown in the figure.

Other improvements include a the simulation of the seasonal cycle in the equatorial Atlantic and the simulation of propagating mesoscale precipitation in the spring season over the continental US.
