The Earth System Model Development (ESMD) - Energy Exascale Earth System Model (E3SM) Principal Investigator (PI) meeting convened virtually October 26–29, 2020. The meeting facilitated interactions between E3SM and its closely related projects, which are funded by the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Office of Biological and Environmental Research (BER) ESMD program area. ESMD’s main objective is to develop E3SM to address the grand challenge of actionable predictions of the changing Earth system, focusing on the most critical scientific questions facing the nation and DOE. The meeting provided an opportunity for participants to review progress, share knowledge and best practices, identify opportunities and challenges, further discussions, and foster collaborations to advance the development of E3SM.
