Creating New Standards to Simplify Earth System Model Analysis

Abstract

The CF metadata standard makes it possible for climate model groups to understand each other’s NetCDF files and even apply their analysis tools to other model’s output. Similarly, tools like the NetCDF Operators provide standard command-line tools for processing of NetCDF files. The Pangeo software stack is becoming a standard for analyzing climate data in python. But there are still areas of earth system model analysis where missing or insufficient standards inhibit progress. The goal of a new U.S. Department of Energy project called SEATS (Simplifying ESM Analysis Through Standards) is to bolster or create standards or tools wherever they can provide the most benefit to multiple Earth system model workflows. This presentation will give an overview of SEATS goals and its contribution to projects such as xCDAT (re-writing CDAT with Xarray) and UXarray (creating an Xarray-styled python library for unstructured grids and internally using the UGRID standard). SEATS has also created a new visualization tool in C++ called ncvis which is inspired by NCview but can handle data on unstructured grids.
