Development of High-Resolution Configuration (v3.HR) for E3SMv3: Enhancing Climate System Representation and Simulation Fidelity

Abstract

While v3.LR is currently utilized for v3 science campaign simulations, the primary focus of this study is on creating the flagship v3.HR configuration. v3.HR introduces notable enhancements, including an atmosphere grid spacing of approximately 25 km, enabling a more detailed representation of atmospheric processes. The ocean and sea-ice components employ a Rossby-Radius Scaled eddy permitting mesh, with resolutions ranging from 18 to 6 km. Additionally, the land and river components adopt a common 0.25o grid.

The primary objective of v3.HR's development is to improve the representation of various climate systems in different Earth system components. By leveraging higher resolution, the configuration aims to provide more accurate simulations of tropical cyclones, the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC), mountain snowpack, and other climate extreme events. The increased resolution facilitates the capture of finer-scale physical processes, enhancing the realism and fidelity of climate simulations.

We will present an overview of the developmental versions of v3.HR and the planned simulation campaign. This presentation will provide valuable insights into the progress made and the future trajectory of the high-resolution configuration.
