Abstract

Many of society's most urgent and complex problems require finding ways to integrate scientific disciplines and multiple forms of knowledge. There has been growing interest in pursuing interdisciplinary or transdisciplinary approaches to research but the nuances and mechanics of how to effectively and meaningfully operationalize such work are still not well understood. While integrating different knowledges, disciplines, epistemologies, value systems, and priorities is not trivial, some long-standing research and practical approaches exist. This session aims to bring together reflections, best practices, lessons learned, and to provide recommendations on how to engage in inter and trans-disciplinary work in a meaningful and effective manner.

We encourage submissions from individuals and teams who have designed and implemented efforts, from scholars who are generating new knowledge and recommendations to inform these practices, and from those who can provide perspectives on the institutional mechanisms that promote this work.
