This publication reports on the improvements in climate simulation of atmospheric phenomena and the mean climate state when UNICON is used a the convective parameterization in the NCAR Community Atmosphere Model (CAM). The figure depicts the excellent simulation of the tropical intraseasonal variability in precipitation associated with the Madden Julian Oscillation. Other improvements of note are the reduction in the bias associated with the simulation of the South Pacific Convergence Zone precipitation that induces an erroneous double ITCZ and improvements in the diurnal cycle of precipitation. These are attributable to the improved process representation within UNICON.
